Susan Sanders

Susie joined chambers as a tenant in September 2016 and has developed a strong and broad family court practice. She also practises immigration law about which she is passionate. Susie undertook her mediation training in 2021 and is working towards accreditation, working closely with her experienced supervisor. She is a member of the Family Mediators Association.

In late 2025 Susie decided to focus on her mediation practice to assist more families to work together to make decisions about their children and financial matters post-separation. She wanted to help separating couples avoid the possibility of protracted, expensive and damaging court proceedings and to work with them to prioritise their children’s needs and reach fair proposals about how to divide finances.

Susie is a skilled and sensitive mediator who recognises the stress caused by relationship breakdown and the difficulties and emotional load of discussing how to separate finances and agree how children should divide their time between their parents.

She is experienced in mediating between couples in dispute in relation to child arrangements and in relation to finances as well as all issues mediation dealing with both.

Susie is happy to mediate with others involved such as solicitors, and is keen to use the expertise of her colleagues in chambers acting as early neutral evaluators within mediation to provide advice on discrete issues to both parties.

Susie brings her skills and experience as a barrister to her mediation practice, both as an advocate and a keen negotiator, along with her friendly and empathetic nature. While she cannot provide legal advice in mediation, she can give clear legal information to those she works with to help them understand the law and the considerations they need to work through, as well as to reality-test possible options for them and their family. She does this in a sensitive but practical and focused way, helping to manage difficult topics and conversations to support parties to make their own decisions to move forward in a child-focused way.

Susie offers mediation in person and online. She also offers appointments in separate spaces if it is not safe to mediate in the same room, or either party finds it too difficult to be in the same space as their former partner.

Susie is happy to receive referrals from solicitors as well as individuals on a direct access basis.

Susie is very aware of her duties as a mediator and follows the Family Mediation Council’s Code of Practice.

X v X (all issues 2025): co-mediated by way of shuttle mediation a dispute between a separated couple where there was dispute regarding dividends owed to one party from the sole trader business of the other. Concluded mediation successfully.

X v X (all issues 2025): mediated online between a couple where only supported contact had taken place since separation. Agreed plan for progression of contact to overnights and detailed plan regarding communication between the parties.

X v X (child arrangements 2025): successful mediation regarding a child that was refusing to see his father and the third set of court proceedings had been issued. Parties agreed a plan to move forwards that they both agreed was in the child’s best interests.

X v X (child arrangements 2024): mediated online between a couple who had intractable dispute about the time the children spent with their father. Concluded mediation with full agreement set out in parenting plan.
